The existing legal norms governing the protection of users' personal data on the Internet are analyzed. The gaps and contradictions in modern Russian legislation are revealed. The problems of unauthorized access, data leaks and ways to increase the effectiveness of legal mechanisms to ensure personal confidentiality in the context of rapid technology development are considered.
