The individual features of the stage of comparative research in the production of tracological identification of shoes by their footprints are considered. The order and order of application of the methods are given, as well as the conditions ensuring the reliability of the research results. It is noted that, in addition to using the matching method, it is also advisable to implement the overlay method using the GIMP graphics editor, the advantages of which include: technical capabilities that allow replacing Adobe PhotoShop used by experts, efficiency and ease of its use, and compliance with copyright and related rights of software developers. The results of its application are demonstrated, which make it possible to prevent expert errors when examining traces with similar common features.
