Examines the problems of using the forensic characterization of crimes in investigation methods, due to recent changes in the structure of crime, the development of technology and a critical rethinking of the theoretical foundations of forensic science. In order to optimize the investigation process, with the help of the forensic characterization of crimes, directions for its subsequent development are proposed: digitalization and automation of the processing of empirical data, increasing the degree of concretization of the forensic characterization by creating multi-level and regional models, adapting its structure to modern new specialized and high-tech types of crime and integration into decision support systems and algorithms of actions of the investigator in the criminal case under investigation.
