Nowadays, information has become one of the key resources not only for ordinary people, but also for commercial companies and the state. Private intelligence companies provide a whole range of opportunities to collect and analyze the necessary data in order to achieve specific economic or political goals. However, such companies often remain outside the public eye and rarely become the subject of scientific research. In the study, the authors used combined scientific methods of cognition, including the system-structural, formal-logical and specifically sociological method, as well as applied cognitive techniques such as observation, comparison and generalization. In addition, the authors relied on key principles of political science and criminal law. The empirical basis of the research was scientific publications and current data on private intelligence companies. The scientific work examines in detail the concept of private intelligence companies, their features and methods of functioning; provides the historical context of the development of private intelligence companies in the United States and Russia, large companies in this industry, and examines how they affect security in the world. The authors established the need for continuous improvement and adjustment of the legislative framework in the field of private intelligence companies, it was studied that it is necessary to raise awareness of citizens about the problems of interference of foreign private intelligence companies in the life of the public. Examples of violations of international legislation by these companies and the current stage of this problem in Russia are also outlined.
