The criminal legal characteristics of crimes encroaching on the security of the information space of the Russian Federation are analyzed. The components of crimes in the field of information security are investigated, as well as objective and subjective signs of these acts. Particular attention is paid to qualifying features and problems of distinguishing between related corpus delicti. The issues of improving criminal legislation in the context of the development of information technologies and the emergence of new types of cybercrimes are being considered. The methodological basis is formal-legal, comparative-legal and statistical research methods. Scientific novelty lies in the development of a systematic approach to the criminal legal characterization of crimes in the information sphere, taking into account modern challenges and threats.
