The current problems of traffic management in the Russian Federation and promising directions for their solution are considered. The system of distribution of powers between federal, regional and municipal authorities was analyzed, key gaps in interdepartmental interaction were identified. A specific example (the situation in Irkutsk) demonstrates the consequences of inconsistency in the actions of various departments: increased congestion, increased accident rates, ineffective spending of budget funds. Listed are systemic barriers — from a lack of data and competencies to the high cost of technology and resistance to change. Comprehensive measures have been proposed to improve traffic management: the introduction of a unified information system, the integration of intelligent transport systems, professional retraining of specialists, strengthening cyber protection of infrastructure, and the development of public private partnerships. The need to implement four key principles — a systematic approach, interdepartmental coordination, digitalization and constant monitoring — to achieve the goals of the Strategy for improving road safety of the Russian Federation until 2030 was emphasized. and for the future until 2036.
