The article examines several current aspects of the problem of virtual reality (VR): the concept of virtuality, the ontological status and varieties of VR, its con-tradictory nature, and theoretical approaches to its scientific understanding. By an-alyzing the socio-psychological issues associated with the development of VR, the author concludes that computer-based, technical virtual reality often has a negative impact on the psychic virtual reality of consciousness. The causes and conditions of the mental deviations arising in such cases await serious scientific investigation. The technical refinement of virtual cyberspace requires the anticipatory develop-ment of human consciousness.
