In the light of the theory of law enforcement, the question of identifying the formation of the Soviet criminal investigation department in the general process of revolutionary transformations in Russia in 1917–1919 is considered and resolved in connection with the formation in the information space of ideas about direct continuity between the detective police of the Russian Empire and the Soviet criminal investigation department, questioning the date of the celebration of the professional holiday «Day a criminal investigation officer». On the basis of historical and legal analysis and theoretical and legal assessment of the state and development of criminal investigative activity on the eve and after the revolutions of february–october 1917, the direct mediation of its organizational and legal forms by both social and political processes is proved.
