The issues of the current state of document materials examination are considered. In judicial acts, such expertise is called differently. In regulatory documents there is also no single approach to their name and place in the system of forensic examinations. Since materials are subject to research, and research methods are aimed at studying their composition and properties, examinations of document materials should belong to the class of examinations of materials, substances and products made from them. There are three groups of expert competencies that determine the reliability of the expert's conclusion, among which: the ability to apply research methods and evaluate the results of their application, the ability to solve an expert problem and the ability to conduct research in accordance with the law, prepare an expert opinion and support it in court. The problems of the methodological nature of expert research of document materials include: shortcomings of existing (developed and applied) methods of expert research; substitution of methods of expert research with materials of a different nature; giving legitimacy to the author's developments by approving them in organizations and institutions unrelated to forensic expertise; lack of methods for solving a number of expert tasks and research new objects.
