The dialectical relationship between economic development and environmental security, which is especially relevant for resource-intensive economies such as Russia, the United States and China. It is shown that the exploitation of natural capital, while ensuring economic growth, simultaneously creates environmental risks, including pollution of various environments and degradation of ecosystems. A comparative analysis of the impact of the resource factor on the economic development of the leading powers is presented, demonstrating that the structure of the natural resource potential predetermines the specifics of their economic activities and, accordingly, the nature of environmental problems. Conceptual approaches to the harmonization of economic development and environmental security based on the principles of the «green» economy, technological re-equipment and environmental regulation.
