Currently, the information sphere has been formed, which is provided by the functioning of a system of digital infrastructure facilities. The elements of this system, which represent information processes and their means of implementation with their inherent functionality of information transformation, are associated with the search, analysis, storage and ordering of information, and can also be used as technical and forensic tools at the current stage of development of criminal procedure and criminalistic activities, which determines the importance of finding and researching ways and means of methods of their integration in solving forensic problems. The introduction of information retrieval technologies in the field of criminal proceedings, as well as their application, is not yet able to improve the quality of criminal proceedings. Technologies only outline the boundaries and show the possibilities of their application. The effectiveness of the use of advanced information technologies in the field of criminal proceedings only affects the effectiveness of criminal proceedings, allows you to pay attention to the details. All this indicates the existence of criminal procedural guarantees that ensure the protection of the legitimate interests of individuals, the State, and society in public criminal proceedings. The pluralism of opinions of prominent scientists indicates the need for further study of information retrieval tools that make it possible to find and record digital (electronic, virtual, computer) traces of criminal activity in time. However, most of the research is devoted to the development and use of special technical and forensic tools in the field of forensic expertise, of course, which significantly increases the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies, but modern high-tech developments, special programs with subsequent use in proving the guilt (not guilty) of a person in the commission of a crime should be used at the initial stages of the investigation., to increase the effectiveness of the use of digital footprints by investigators in the detection and investigation of crimes. The study examines information retrieval technologies in the work of an investigator with various types of traces of criminal activity.
