A multidimensional legal phenomenon specific to the civil process in England - the overriding objective of the English civil proceedings is being analyzed. The concept of the overriding objective, various approaches to its content, including the examination through the idea of evolution of English civil justice, as well as relationship between the overriding objective and other legal institutions of English civil litigation are scrutinized. The author formulates the modern approach in relation to the characteristics of the overriding objective.
