The end of the 20th century demonstrated that scientific, technological and cultural progress did not ensure either sustainability or global security. Strategic arms control has failed to deter the development of new types of weapons and the proliferation of nuclear technologies, as well as other means of mass destruction. The ideological collapse of the Soviet system did not eliminate key socio-economic contradictions, but, on the contrary, contributed to the growth of destructive processes in society — from the strengthening of separatism and nationalism to extremist manifestations of a radical nature. The phenomenon of extremism (Latin «extremus» — extreme) deserves special attention in the context of modern threats. Integrating with manifestations of separatism, nationalism and religious fundamentalism, extremist ideology catalyzes the radicalization of social processes, creating a direct threat to security at the individual, social and state levels. The evolutionary dynamics of extremism in the twenty-first century demonstrates a significant expansion of the spheres of influence of this phenomenon on various aspects of the functioning of the world community. The destabilizing impact of extremism undermines the foundations of social stability and the prospects for sustainable development. A priority scientific task is a comprehensive study of the nature of extremism, the formation of a systematic conceptual framework for the analysis of historical, sociological, political, psychological, informational and power components of countering this threat.
