This article examines the object and subject matter of crimes against cultural property, using comparative legal perspectives from the criminal legislation of the Russian Federation and the Federal Republic of Germany. It analyzes doctrinal approaches to defining the direct object of crimes, highlighting the blanket nature and terminological heterogeneity of Russian regulations that impact classification. Using German law as an example, it demonstrates the specifics of a broader understanding of cultural property (kulturgut), specialized legislative regulation, and expert support. Proposals are formulated to standardize terminology and improve the criminal protection of cultural property, taking into account its contemporary forms of existence.
