The use of artificial intelligence technologies in solving intellectual tasks is becoming more widespread in various fields. The use of artificial neural networks is an important area of expertise in forensic science. Since the functioning of neural network models does not exclude the possibility of erroneous and inaccurate results, it is crucial to determine the limits of an expert's responsibility in the event of incorrect operation of the neural network when it is used in the process of expert research. The purpose of the work is to determine the degree of responsibility of an expert when using neural network technologies in the process of expert research. It is determined that the very idea of bringing artificial intelligence to legal responsibility is not entirely correct. A more logical approach would be for subjects to acknowledge responsibility for erroneous results made by artificial intelligence systems, users, or developers of these systems. With regard to forensic expertise, it is concluded that the process of applying neural network technologies and the results obtained should be fully under the control of a forensic expert. The expert must independently critically evaluate the conclusions of the neural network, without relying entirely on the algorithm, in order to avoid expert errors and the formulation of unreasonable and biased conclusions. Responsibility for the results of expert research, including those obtained using a neural network, should be assigned to the expert. Neural networks used in the production of forensic examinations should be specially designed for these purposes, and therefore it is necessary to introduce a national standard containing requirements for the development of neural network models. Responsibility for creating low-quality models should be assigned to the neural network developer. The degree of responsibility of an expert in the application of neural networks will be limited by compliance with theoretical and scientific-methodological provisions in the examination, without affecting the field of development and testing of neural network models.
